The Sovereign Self Difference

A New Way...

At Sovereign Self Mental Health, we believe healing isn't about fitting back into the systems that hurt you.
It’s about rising beyond them — into the truth of who you are.

Sovereign Self was born from a simple but radical mission:
to empower you to reclaim your own mind, your own heart, and your own life.

In a world that rewards conformity, numbing, and dependence, we offer a different path — one of self-trust, clarity, and liberation.

True sovereignty means you are no longer at the mercy of outdated systems, external validation, or societal norms.
You are free to choose your own way, to heal on your terms, and to build a life that reflects your true essence — not what the world tells you it should be.

Why break away from the traditional box?
Because the old ways were built to keep you surviving, not thriving.
They were designed to quiet your intuition, limit your choices, and teach you that worth must be earned or approved by others. But you were never meant to live small, silenced, or caged.

Sovereignty is your birthright.
It's remembering that you are not broken.
It's reclaiming your power to heal, to create, to expand.
It’s choosing wholeness over perfection, freedom over fitting in, and radical self-ownership over reliance on systems that don't see your fullness.

Our approach offers a radically integrative approach to mental health — blending traditional therapy, holistic wellness, and expanded states of consciousness to honor your full being. Our flexible tiered model allows you to choose your level of support, whether that’s self-guided healing, short-term targeted therapy, or deep long-term work.
For those called to explore further, we also offer support for psychedelic therapy and integration, helping you process insights and ground transformation safely and meaningfully. Everything we offer is built to support your sovereignty — no boxes, no rigid rules, just powerful tools for your own awakening.

Why We Are Moving Away from Insurance

Insurance was never designed with your healing in mind — it was designed for systems, for billing codes, and for liability. At Sovereign Self, we believe you deserve care that is built around you, not around what a third party is willing to approve.

Here is what accepting insurance actually means in practice: it means we are required to diagnose you — and not always on our terms. Insurance companies often dictate which diagnoses they will cover, creating very real risk that a client receives a label that fits a billing requirement rather than their actual experience. That diagnosis then becomes part of your permanent medical record and accessible to insurance companies whenever they choose to request it. Your story, your struggles, your healing journey — held in a file you may never fully control.

It also means someone else decides how you heal. Insurance can cap the number of sessions you receive, interrupt your healing at inappropriate times, and limit the types of care available to you entirely. Much of what we offer — integrative, holistic, and expanded approaches to mental health — simply does not exist within the insurance framework. Choosing insurance means choosing a narrower version of what's possible for you.

And finally, it means our clinicians are locked into structures that do not serve them — and a clinician who is not cared for cannot fully care for you. We believe clinician wellbeing is client care. Full stop. Moving away from insurance is not a limitation. It is a liberation — for you, and for us.

Why We Don't Diagnose Unless Necessary

Mental health care was originally built around medical necessity — a framework designed for hospitals, insurance billing, and crisis intervention. That framework has its place. But it was never meant to be the whole story of what it means to be human. Most of what brings people to therapy is not a disorder. It is life. Grief, relationship pain, self-doubt, burnout, disconnection — and the very human experience of not knowing how to navigate something you were never taught. We don't have classes in school on emotions, empathy, how to love well, or how to rebuild after something breaks you. And yet when we struggle, we are handed a label instead of a hand.

A diagnosis is not neutral. It follows you — into your medical record, into future healthcare, into spaces where it has no business being. And quietly, it can follow you into your own mind, shaping whether you see yourself as someone in process or someone who is broken. You are not broken. You are human.

We will engage in diagnosis when it is truly necessary for your care. But we will never reduce you to one simply because a system expects it.

*Please note- if you are choosing to use insurance whether in-network or out-of-network benefits, we are required to provide a diagnosis.

How Our Structure Is Built for Client Care

We believe the way a practice is run is not separate from the care it provides. It is the care it provides. That starts with our clinicians. We are intentional about caseload — because a clinician who is stretched thin, burnt out, or unsupported cannot show up fully for you. When we take care of our people, our people can take care of you. That is not a courtesy. It is a client care decision.

Transparency is not something we offer at intake and then set aside. Every client has access through their portal to documentation that lays out, in plain language, exactly how our practice works — how decisions are made, what you can expect, and what your rights are within this relationship. As our practice grows and evolves, we communicate those updates to our clients directly. You are never left guessing.

And beyond policy, we believe in something that the traditional mental health model often overlooks: relationship. Not just the relationship between you and your clinician, though we hold that as sacred. We also consider the relationship between the client and this practice as a whole. Informed consent is not a form you sign once and forget — it is an ongoing conversation, a living agreement that evolves as you do. Every interaction, every touchpoint, every communication is designed to reinforce that you are seen, respected, and valued here — not as a client number, but as a human being we are honored to walk alongside.

At Sovereign Self Mental Health, we don't just treat symptoms.
We nurture your evolution.

You’re not here to be a better version of who the world wants you to be.
You’re here to become the fullest expression of who you already are.

Welcome home to yourself.  ❤️

We recognize that healing is not one-size-fits-all. As a plant-medicine-friendly practice, we hold space for individuals working with cannabis, psilocybin, and other sacred tools as part of their growth. While we do not provide or facilitate these substances, we believe in supporting our clients’ autonomy, safety, and integration every step of the way.
